National Coalition of South Asian Organizations Launches One Community United Campaign for Immigrant and Civil Rights on Anniversary of Formation

In June 2008, more than 30 community-based organizations around the country came together to announce the formation of the National Coalition of South Asian Organizations (NCSO). On the one year anniversary of the formation of the Coalition, the thirty members of the NCSO are proud to unveil a new campaign- One
Community United: A Campaign for Immigrant and Civil Rights. As part of the campaign, members of the NCSO will be advocating with policymakers, conducting town halls around the country and sharing stories with the media. One Community United kicks off with an inaugural town hall in Atlanta, GA co-sponsored by Coalition partners including Raksha and South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), on June 16, 2009. Town halls in New Jersey, Chicago, the Bay Area, and the Washington DC area will occur over the next few months.

South Asian Community Needs and Policy Issues Presented to Presidential Transition Members

Immigration Priorities for the South Asian Community

Civil Rights Transition Paper

This month, SAALT has been focused on presenting information about policy needs and concerns facing South Asian communities to members of the Presidential Transition Team.  In particular, SAALT has provided information to members of the Immigration Policy Working Group; the Civil Rights and Justice Agency Review Team (regarding post 9/11 civil rights issues); and to senior Asian Americans with the Transition Team during a meeting with national Asian American and Pacific Islander community leaders.

SAALT consulted with members of the National Coalition of South Asian Organizations  in presenting information to the transition team and relied upon the NCSO’s National Action Agenda, a policy platform that articulates 9 policy priorities and provides policy recommendations.
